Ascension and many individual members continue a long tradition of ministry in Christ’s name to those in the community who have special needs or circumstances. And both Church and individuals receive blessings in return. Our ministries include:
· Frankfort Men’s Shelter. Once providing lodging for homeless men out of Ascension and other downtown churches, members of the church assist in several ways. Members are personally engaged in helping homeless men make the transition back to productive lives as members of society. Residents attend church, participate in adult Sunday School classes, volunteer for activities in the church, and join members for the breakfasts traditionally served every Sunday morning by the Ascension Men’s Club. Ascension is known for being a “homeless friendly” congregation that welcomes, feeds, and nurtures men and women in need.
· Frankfort Soup Kitchen. Begun by the Coalition of Committed Christians, Inc., the Soup Kitchen operated out of Ascension for several years. Now in its own facility, it serves over 27,000 meals each year. A team from Ascension prepares and serves meals once a month. Ascension’s Program Director serves jointly as the executive director of the Frankfort Men’s Shelter and the Frankfort Soup Kitchen and facilitates the support and involvement of Ascension and its members.
· Resource Office for Social Ministries (ROSM). Ascension members actively support this coalition formed by downtown churches. ROSM provides food, clothing, funds, and other needs, and arranges for medicine and medical care for families in critical circumstances.
· Women’s Shelter. In addition to the individual support of church members, Ascension makes its facilities available for fund raising events for the shelter.
· The Stewart Home School. A nationally known residential facility for adults who are mentally challenged, Stewart Home residents regularly worship at Ascension. Nearly every Sunday year round, the school buses a load of residents to the early Eucharist where many actively participate as altar servers and acolytes. Traditionally, members of the Stewart Home Bell Choir also perform as part of the season of Advent at Ascension.
· American Red Cross. The Church of the Ascension is certified by the American Red Cross as a Shelter Unit in the event of emergency or disaster.
· Youth Mission Trips. Ascension youth regularly go on mission trips, ranging from helping with vacation bible school in a South Chicago neighborhood to working in Appalachian communities of eastern Kentucky.
