Church of the Ascension

Vestry, Officers

   Minimize

Members of the Ascension Vestry are elected in a Parish-wide meeting held in January of each year. As a rule, three new members are elected to three-year terms each year. The vestry of an Episcopal parish is responsible for assisting the Rector in nurturing its Church family, as well as the larger community; for overseeing parish finances; for maintaining all parish facilities; and for choosing community and parish leadership, including members of task forces and committees. The vestry also chooses the Church’s rector. The Treasurer and Chancellor are volunteer officers of the church.

Michal Smith Mello
Senior Warden 2012

Michal, who attends the 8:00 service, has been an active member of Ascension since relocating in Frankfort more than 15 years ago. She is completing her second term on the vestry and serving as Senior Warden for the third time. Previously, she and husband Scott were active members of Trinity Church in Danville where, for the first time, she found a spiritual home. Not a "cradle" Episcopalian, Michal attended a Baptist Church as a child. In her late thirties, Michal experienced the Episcopal Church for the first time as a volunteer at Barnes Mountain. She was inspired by the church’s mission there. Many years later, she and her then-new husband Scott returned to the Episcopal Church where she was baptized and confirmed. Michal served on the vestry during the early phases of planning for the church renovation. She presently serves on the Altar Guild, as a lector, chalice bearer, and for many years as editor of the Parish Press. Michal is a retired Senior Policy Analyst for a state-funded think tank, the Kentucky Long-Term Policy Research Center.

David Hurt
Junior Warden, 2011
David is from Shakertown, but has lived 35 years in Peaks Mill in northern Franklin County.  Although raised a Methodist, he saw an Episcopal priest at Saint Phillip's in Harrodsburg re-enact the part of a bishop general, Leonidas Polk, who prayed in St. Phillip's after the battle of Perryville.  After this he was hooked on the mystery, beauty, and tradition of the Episcopal church.
He studied agriculture at UK, but found theatre as a vocation when he was cast as Sir Thomas More's son-in-law in a play he auditioned for on a lark.  Although he earned a master's in theatre at the University of Illinois, his farming background drew him back to Kentucky where he raised sheep and tobacco on Elkhorn Creek until 15 years ago.  Economics dictated a change, and he studied theatre in New York for a while, and he worked in Louisville and Lexington as an actor, director, and set designer.
He and his wife Normandi Ellis live and work at their retreat center on their Peaks Mill farm called PenHouse, and Normandi leads writing workshops there.  David cooks, gardens and teaches old-time banjo music.
